AMERICORPS

Americorps

AmeriCorps is a stream of national services launched in 1994 by President Bill Clinton. This program engages more than 50,000 people annually. It was created to expand opportunities for Americans to serve their community and earn money for college (Education Award). AmeriCorps supports several types of programs: VISTA, NCCC, State, National Direct and Education Award only.

The Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) is a consortium of 19 colleges and universities in Montana established to integrate public service and academic learning. As a result, communities receive valuable assistance and expertise while students receive important hands-on learning. Through MTCC, the AmeriCorps program is housed in the Technical Outreach Office at Montana Tech.

Under the big AmeriCorps umbrella is Campus Corps. The mission of the Montana Campus Corps is to engage students in meaningful extracurricular and/or curricular community service. We also strive to address critical community needs by coordinating service initiatives and engaging students in service. The program also works to strengthen partnerships between Montana communities and their neighboring higher education institutions, to develop a large body of student leaders who have a lifelong commitment to service and create an institutional ethic of serving among MTCC member institutions. MTCC has positions available to earn and Education Award are 300 hrs (Community Partners), 450 hrs, 900 hrs and 1700 hrs.

The Montana Tech Campus Corps team consists of two full-time team leaders and eight part-time members who contribute to community and campus based programs to help meet the goals set for by the National Campus Compact. Campus Corps members help tutor at the Legion Oasis Neighborhood Network Center. They also arrange community service project opportunities for the Upward Bound program, RYO, Acadia Healthcare and Clark Fork Watershed Education Program (CFWEP).
